Diego L. Fernandez (Argentina)
Prof. Diego L. Fernandez is an Orthopaedic Surgeon whose expertise extends throughout the musculoskeletal system. Honorary Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Berne, Dr. Fernandez actively practices in the Lindenhof Hospital in Berne, Switzerland.
Dr. Fernandez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is the son of one of Argentina’s most accomplished Orthopaedic Surgeons. He graduated from St. Andrew’s Scots School in Buenos Aires in 1963 and received his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 1970. Dr. Fernandez gained his Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery training at the feet of giants in the field. From 1970 – 1972 he studied under Dr. Eduardo Zancolli in Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by one year at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, under Dr. Alvin Ingram. Dr. Fernandez moved to Switzerland under the mentorship of Prof. Maurice E. Müller completing his Orthopaedic Residency in 1975 at which time he assumed the position of Chief of the Hand Surgery Unit at the University of Berne. He remained at the University Hospital until 1983 when he became Chief of Traumatology of the Surgical Department, Kantonsspital Aarau, Switzerland. Dr. Fernandez remained in Aarau until 1992 when he was encouraged by Prof. Maurice E. Müller to return to Berne to take over the continuing care of his hip patients.
Prof. Fernandez is an active member of numerous international and U.S. professional societies including the Swiss Orthopaedic Association, the Swiss Society of Accident Medicine, The Swiss Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), The American Orthopaedic Trauma Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also an active member of the AO International and AO Switzerland.
Professionally, he is a devoted upper extremity, hip and trauma surgeon. Throughout his career, he has written over 130 articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed orthopaedic literature. His particular academic interest is related to surgery of the wrist including the treatment of distal radius and scaphoid fractures as well as their complications. He has authored numerous articles and chapters relating to these topics and together with Dr. Jesse Jupiter he published comprehensive book entitled: “Fractures of the Distal Radius: a practical approach to management”.
