First Chinese Wrist Arthroscopy Workshop- September 23-24th 2011

The first Chinese Wrist Arthroscopy Workshop was held in Shangai on September 23th-24th at HuashanHospital, Fudan University of Shangai. This hands-on meeting was put together by Professor Wen-Dong Xu, General Secretary of Chinese Hand Surgery Society, in cooperation with Professors PC Ho from Hong Kong, ZJ Li from USA and G Herzberg from France. Podium presentations were held on Friday whereas an 8 labs-on equipment workshop was held on the whole Saturday. There were about 70 participants with a very smart participation. The topics went from diagnostic arthroscopy to TFCC repairs, SL pinning, arthroscopic debridement. Some sessions were also devoted to total wrist replacement. Future issues of this meeting are planned.

IRCAD Brasil - Barretos Inauguration!!! July 9th 2011 Christophe Mathoulin

Opening ceremony of the IRCAD Brazil on July 9, 2011

The IRCAD Brazil is no longer a project, it has become a reality.

The opening ceremony of the IRCAD Brazil took place on July 9, and was attended by Dr. h.c. mult. Sybill Storz, General Manager of KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG., Latin American education senior officials, Covidien representatives, Brazilian and French politicians including Arnold Munnich, health advisor to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Roland Ries, French Senator and Mayor of Strasbourg. 

All courses held at the IRCAD-Brazil will be organized similarly to the ones held at the IRCAD France and IRCAD Taiwan, under the scientific supervision of Professor Jacques Marescaux and his team, along with IRCAD's international Faculty. 

Thanks to our exceptional partners (HOSPITAL DE CANCER DE BARRETOS) and to the leadership of Henrique Prata and his team, the project will undoubtedly be highly successful.

BOOK: The Life and Times of Guillaume Dupuytren 1777- 1835

At the time of Dupuytren’s birth in 1777, France was still governed by an absolute monarch, Louis XVI. When Dupuytren died in 1835, he had lived through two revolutions (1789 and 1830), a republic, a ‘Directoire’, a consulate, an empire under Napoleon and another two royal restorations under Louis XVIII and Charles X.

Dupuytren was always closely invol"Times New Roman">The name Dupuytren has become immortal in medicine, not only in the contracture of the palm, which he described in extreme detail, but also in a specific fracture of the fibula. His name also survives in road names, in the ‘Musée Dupuytren’, the museum of pathological anatomy at the medical faculty in Paris, in the new university centre of Limoges, which is named after him and in an amphitheatre at the Parisian hospital Hôtel-Dieu. The anniversary of his birth and death are still commemorated in Pierre-Buffière where he was born and in Paris where he studied, worked, lived and died. A statue of him has been erected in the inner courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Paris and a memorial has been built in his place of birth.

The Life and Times of Guillaume Dupuytren spans a distressing era of French history (1777-1835), in which the centre of medicine moved from Italy to France, with Paris at its core. The author, plastic surgeon Prof. Dr. Paul Wylock, tells an exciting and beautifully illustrated story which will appeal to anybody with a professional or general interest in medicine, history or both.

NEW President's word s- September 2010 : Tommy Lindau

Dear Friends,

thanks Paco! I agree with past president!

In fact, I am planning to present the EWAS views on academic input to arthroscopy, not as a pointing finger, but what needs to be done to support our views, which are currently experienced based, not evidence based.

Reg Carpal tunnel release, there is solid evidence in well performed, well powered randomised studies, that you can pick your weapon, the patients will do equally well.

So equilibristic endoscopists may favour keyhole surgery, the rest stay open.

Reg CMC I, scaphoid fixations, capsulodesis, ganglionectomies etc....we need randomised studies to support our choice. It looks like there is quite a few "pilot studies" out there, so the procedure is now tweaked to perfection, but this is when the randomised study has to be done.

Main outcome measurement....pinch strength?, DASH? and so on.

Second outcome measurement....sick leave?, scar???, costs? and so on

Arthroscopists have been seen for many years as "the crazy bunch", technicians .... "for those who have a hammer, everything looks like a nail" has been quoted about us....

I think the time ... 2010... is our time to improve scientific quality as we have shown for 20 odd years (25+ for Terry Whipple, Gary Poehling and other pioneers) that arthroscopy is safe, here to stay and gives tremendous input to our service as surgeons, being wrist, hand, upper limb etc. I highlighted this fact earlier with a complex wrist reconstruction by Anders Wallmon in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Arthroscopy and we are here to stay. Full stop!

BUT we can and must improve the scientific support for our suggested treatments to convince nihilistic colleagues who think we are only "showing off"!

I have no personal view regarding CMC I arthroscopy here! I am impressed by everyone attempting new techniques and I am in awe to all of you out there trying to improve what we love, arthroscopy!!

BUT I would appreciate a balanced view, supported by evidence!

I hope this does not disencourage you, but rather stimulate you to set up well designed studies.

I will through the EWAS website outline these thoughts in greater detail, but feel free to drop a line if you want any help!

Many thanks Christophe!!

It is a great pleasure to become President in this fairly young (2005) but excellent society!

I am very proud to have such excellent previous presidents, coming presidents, EWAS executive board and to be part of all of you experienced and less experienced arthroscopists!!

But without our general secretary Christophe we would still be a young society of crawling toddlers and now, reflecting on our recent performances in Madrid and Bucharest, we are a mature society of experienced marathon runners!! We have done a great job and I hope it will continue to evolve!!

I have contacted the organising committee in Norway (Jan Ragnar Haugstvedt and Torstein Husby) with some prel thoughts about our session/sessions next year (2628th of May), but I would welcome ideas from all of you, making you part of this opportunity to share our experience and knowledge! If you decide to send me ideas, please do it in a separate email to tommy.lindau@derbyhospitals.nhs.uk as we would otherwise get too many emails through medtool.

I would here also take the opportunity to express my appreciation of replies with not only personal reflections or suggestions, but esp those who send replies with scientific support to their views, most lately exampled by Prof John Stanley, where his suggestions give you a right not only to do the case as an expert, but also safely reg any medico legal issues. Thanks John and all others who contribute to this fantastic web-based opportunity to share ideas from around the globe! It is amazing to wake up with emails from members who worked and passed on suggestions to your case when you slept....imagine that 10-15 years ago !?

I hope I will make you members proud through my year and I hope you want to share various views that can help EWAS to further evolve....please feel free to send me such ideas, again directly as outlined above.

We joked in Bucharest that our EUROPEAN society in reality is now GLOBAL and my aim is to make it UNIVERSAL!! ;-)
